Name: Kouen Ren
Door: Door pass — Dominant

Canon: Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
Canon Point: Night 294

Age: 32
Appearance: here or here

History: Wikipedia
Personality: Much of Kouen was an enigma. However, his reputation preceeded him and he was famous throughout the world of Magi both due to the fact that he is the fierce general of the greatest army and one of the only men who had conquered numerous dungeons. Perhaps the number is not as impressive as Sinbad's, but he certainly made himself a man not to be underestimated. Even the Sindrian King cannot look down on him.

Generally Kouen is very serious. He never really laughs or jokes although he seems to take such behavior in stride and does not seem to mind it. It is very likely that being the eldest son of a powerful empire has sort of stricken out the possibly of being carefree at all. For his whole life he has held great responsibilities, and the lives of hundreds of other men (and women) lay in his hands. He does not have the time or the room for frivolous behavior. He has probably not had a lot of free time at all. Thus, when he does get it, apparently he gets a little spaced out. Kouen has not spent much time outside of battle and does not really know what to do in that case. In that respect he is a bit hopeless, which his siblings find a bit endearing. Another trait that makes him less "war machine" and a little more human is that he apparently has trouble with his fashion sense. Yet again it seems that too much time on the field has left him without some very basic skills.

He is very intelligent, perhaps in the way that makes others feel threatened. While his full brother Koumei acts as his adviser and also tactician, he is no slacker himself. He can also read Toran, which is an ancient language used in a world that existed before the one in canon. This is an exceptional talent and takes a lot of smarts. Even his cousin Hakuei is surprised when she learns of this ability. He has a profound love of learning and knowledge, especially history, and loves to immerse himself in the lessons that can be taught.

It is because of his knowledge and understanding of Toran that one of Kouen's main ideals has taken root. In the ancient tales there is talk of one king ruling the entire world and Kouen aims to bring that kind of existence back. He once wished to be that king that united all the nations and peoples, and he had been making preparations for this for quite some time. It is clearly not something he rushed, but it is safe to say that he believed (and the way others treat him has no doubt fueled this belief) that he was entirely capable of conquering and ruling the entire world. He is not arrogant, however. He recognizes that he needs help in the endeavor and expresses his wish that his brothers (and cousins) will aid him. An interesting point is that he does not and has not attempted to force them to help him in any way. He is a fair man despite everything. Eventually he even reveals that he does not really want to be king any longer, and even defers to his brother Koumei as a better leader in times of peace. So while at times it may have seemed like he was mad with power, he mellowed out and respectfully went to live his life in exile with his brothers after his life was pardoned.

Despite Kou being the antagonist country in the story, Kouen is not a completely terrible person. He is greatly liked and respected not only by his subjects but by his family. Koumei clearly looks up to him and Kouha and Kougyoku pretty much fawn all over him. Kougyoku's behavior especially suggests that Kouen is in fact rather kind. Even with Hakuryuu, although he is curt at first, he holds faith in him and also speaks to him as family. Family is important to him and he portrays his spot as the head of the family very well. He would do anything to protect his family, including sacrifice himself (or parts of himself, as the case is with Hakuryuu).

One Positive Trait: Intellectual. Kouen is an intellectual through and through. Knowledge is power and he knows this well. He puts great weight in being a scholar and knowing his history well. Being an intellect has made him a master diplomat as well as a fearsome general, and he is even known to nerd out a little about history now and again.

Three Negative Traits: Warmonger — Kouen believed that he could lead the war to end all wars and essentially take over the world. He is from a conquering and warring nation and did firmly believe in conflict as the right answer to many of the world's problems. He instigated wars and enjoyed being in battle. When he wasn't at war, he hardly knew what to do with himself. War was his entire life up until the end.

Emotionally Stunted — Kouen has a difficult time expressing himself. He often seems to have the same emotion on his face, or lack thereof and is very, very serious. It is hard to crack a smile out of him or even get him to laugh, and he always seems to be very intense or angry about something instead, even when he's not. He's a very stoic individual but maybe a bit too stoic. It can definitely affect the way he interacts with others and has given him an intimidating reputation.

Excessive Hubris — Kouen has always been sure of himself, perhaps too confident and arrogant about his place in the world. He truly believed that he could conquer everything and that no one and nothing would stand in his way. He believes himself better, stronger, more intelligent than anyone else. His hubris may have clouded his judgment at times and lead to his near execution in the end.

Powers and Abilities: Kouen is extremely intelligent, and a master swordsman (he mastered the sword at the age of 9). Additionally, he has conquered three dungeons and thus has three djinn in his keep, each with their own set of unique abilities. Two of them he can also Djinn Equip, which basically means he kind of merges with the djinn to gain more power and do special attacks. His Djinn are as follows:
Agares - A Gravity Djinn. Dwells in the spaulder Kouen wears on his right shoulder. He can manipulate earth with this djinn and also engage in a Djinn Equip. It gives him destructive power, including a beam of light that can shoot through the earth's surface. It's very unlikely he'll use that ability here but it can be nerfed.

Astaroth - A Fire Djinn. Kouen's most used Djinn, that dwells in his sword. He can use fire abilities with this djinn's power, including equipping it to his weapon to create a large fire blast from the tip of his sword. He can also Djinn Equip Astaroth and create a giant white dragon of light, whose flames will not be extinguished until Kouen wills it. It incinerates everything in its path.

Phenex - A Healing Djinn. Dwells in the ornament on Kouen's sword. This djinn has healing abilities and can also transfer organs or limbs to other people (he used this to give Hakuryuu his legs and an arm). He has an ability called the Ring of Admonition which I really don't understand so he just won't be using it at all.
